This text is known today as the Book of Enoch.
The Content of the Book of Enoch
The Book of Enoch consists of five books that tell the story of the 7th patriarch in the Book of Genesis, Enoch. It provides a different perspective on events leading up to the Great Flood of Noah’s time and tells of the Watchers, fallen angels sent to Earth to watch over humans at some unspecified and ancient point in time.
The Book of Enoch tells of the Nephilim, the children born through crossbreeding between the watchers and humans. The Nephilim are described as supernatural, man-eating giants who threatened and plundered mankind.
Enoch’s Role as Mediator
Angered by what the Watchers had done, those described in the book as mighty gods sent the Watchers to an underground prison deep within the Earth. Enoch became the mediator between the gods and the imprisoned Watchers.
